Nathan HALL of Smith County, Tennessee

Nathan HALL

                                         (ca. 1790 - after 1860)
Per Carmack Key, Smith County, Tennessee historian, Nathan HALL was a brother of Claiborne HALL and they each married a daughter of William HEROD, Revolutionary War soldier.    I have found only one child for Nathan and Nancy Frances HEROD HALL, a daughter named Louisiana, born about 1812.

1790-1792            Birth in Virginia.  Nathan HALL is listed as age 50 and under 60

in 1840 census; age 58 in 1850 census, and age 70 in 1860 census.

His birthplace in both 1850 and 1860 was listed as Virginia.

Marriage              The date of the marriage of Nathan HALL to Frances HEROD is unknown.

Their daughter Louisanna is  listed as age 38 in the 1850 census,

thereby providing that the marriage likely occurred before 1812.

Frances was a daughter of Rev. War soldier William HEROD, Sr.  He

moved to Smith Co. TN in 1808.  She was a sister of Elizabeth HEROD

                                HALL, wife of Claiborne HALL.

Carthage Gazette, Vol. 2, No. 97

The following is a list of letters remaining at the post office at Carthage on

March 31, 1811, per Basil SHAW, p.m….  Nathan and Claiborne HALL

(NOTE: It would appear the letter was addressed to both Nathan and

                                Claiborne).

NOTE: Other letters addressed to Nathan and/or Claiborne HALL were dated as early as January 1810.  See Claiborne HALL section for details on this.

24 Sept.1813      enlisted as a private in Captain James WALTON’s Company, in the

regiment of Horsemen commanded by Newton CANNON in the War

with the Creek Indians for a term of three months.  Was discharged

on 3 September 1814.  Also referred to as Volunteer Mounted Riflemen.

NOTE: Daniel M. LANE, husband of Mary Ann HEROD, and sister of

Frances HEROD HALL and Elizabeth HEROD HALL, also enlisted in this

                                same regiment.

NOTE: This same tract of land was sold on 24 July 1819 by Daniel M.

LANE to William HEROD, Sr.   Witnesses were Peter HEROD and Ben

BARRY (Smith County, Tennessee Deed Book G, pp. 124-125).  It was

again sold on 24 December 1819 by William HEROD, Sr. To John W.

TAYLOR referred to as “tract on which Daniel M. LANE now lives.”

Witnesses were Alexander ALLISON, John RAINS, and Thos. R. STOUT.

(Smith County, Tennessee Deed Book G, page 212)

NOTE: Joel DYER has another connection to the HALLs.  In 1802, he was appointed guardian of 6 year old Reuben HALL, orphan of Elizabeth HALL.  I believe Reuben and his sister Margaret were children of Charlton HALL who died about 1798.

Nathan HALL has not been located in the 1820 or 1830 census records.    Why not?  where was he living????  With someone else?

Bill of Sale #666, William HARVEY to Robert H. GILLESPIE, Witness was
Nathan HALL.   Was for sale of slaves – Reubin, a man about 38 years old; Hager, about 28 years old; George about 5 years old and Carey about 2 years old.

(NOTE: I have found no Nathan HALL living in Sumner County during this time period.  Unsure if this is same Nathan HALL (could tell by signature perhaps).    I greatly suspect this is the same Nathan HALL.    The note below provides a roundabout connection to the William HALL and Thankful DOAK family.    What is the relationship, if any?

William GILLESPIE (m. Elizabeth ALLCORN) moved from Wythe or Montgomery Co. VA to Washington Co. TN and then Station Camp Creek area of Sumner Co. TN.  Also lived in Davidson Co.  One of their children Nancy GILLESPIE married Major William HARVEY.  The second wife of William GILLESPIE was Polly WYNNE CROCKETT and they had a son Robert Knox GILLESPIE 1796 – 1866 who married Adaline Morgan CAGE (on 12 April 1827).  Per genforum.genealogy.com/Harvey/messages/5399.html.

Adaline MORGAN CAGE was daughter of William CAGE and Elizabeth DOUGLASS, his 3rd wife.  William CAGE’s last wife was named Anne HALL (before 1770 – Nov. 1800) – married 19 June 1792, daughter of William HALL and Thankful DOAK.

Below may be the most important of all clues linking Nathan HALL to Thomas HALL.

Here is the reference to the Smith County, TN land that I think went from Thomas HALL to Nathan HALL.  Could this be the mysterious missing 6 acres of Thomas HALL’s land?  Nathan before this date had not purchased or been granted any land in Smith Co.

Smith County, Tennessee County Court Order Minute Book 10, 1822 – 1824, pp. 216, 223-229.  This contains a very large listing of delinquent tax payers.  On page 225, Nathan HALL is listed as owning 5 acres land on Peyton’s Creek and 1 w.p. (white poll).

to appear at the next term of the Smith County Circuit Court.

August 15, 1836                On this date the case of William HEROD & Peter HEROD & C. vs.

Claiborne HALL and his wife Elizabeth, Nathan HALL and his wife Francis,

Daniel M. LANE and his wife Mary Ann, James HEROD, Valentine HEROD,

The defendants prayed for a new trial which was not granted.  They then

prayed for an appeal to the Tennessee Supreme Court.  They heard the

case in 1837 and affirmed the judgement by consent.

NOTE: Poleman W. CAGE (per internet sources) was the son of Wilson CAGE and Mary “Polly” DILLARD.  Wilson CAGE died in 1847 in Sumner Co. TN.  He was son of Rev. War veteran Major William CAGE, born 1745 in VA; lived Chatham Co. NC; came to Sumner Co. TN in 1785.  This is indeed interesting as William HALL was deeding land in 1815 on Spring Creek in Smith Co. TN to Wilson CAGE.  William HALL was listed at that time as a resident of Sumner Co. TN.  Does this link Nathan HALL to William HALL????    Claiborne HALL's land was very near Spring Creek.

N athan HALL had only one child that I am aware of: Louisiana HALL, born about 1812.  About 1836 Louisiana HALL had a son out of wedlock by Thomas J. BLACK per Smith Co. TN Court records.   Her children were Edward T.  (Ned) HALL who later married Samella HIGH.  Louisiana’s other child was Lavica (Louisa) HALL who married a MAXEY.

I have found no reference to Nathan HALL after 1860.  I suspect he died in Smith County, Tennessee.  What happened to his land?    1860 census indicates $300 real estate.

  1. On 8 July 1822, Nathan HALL witnessed a deed from William HARVEY to Robert H. GILLESPIE of several slaves. (Sumner County, Loose Originals, page 666, Microfilm Deeds. (Sumner Co. Archives) Did not sign by X on this deed
Per internet (genforum.com) – Nancy GILLESPIE (8 September 1793 – 18 April 1871) married Maj William HARVEY of Virginia. Nancy and Robert Knox GILLESPIE were children of William GILLESPIE (died 1817 Sumner Co. TN) and Elizabeth ALLCORN. William GILLESPIE and Elizabeth ALLCORN were married 1785 in Fort Chiswell, Wythe Co. VA or Montgomery Co. VA. They moved to Max Meadows a few miles away then to Watauga Settlement in Washington Co. TN, then to Station Camp area of Sumner Co. TN. HARVEY was in Davidson Co. before settling in Washington Co.

Robert Knox GILLESPIE (1 December 1795 Sumner Co. TN – 26 May 1866) married Adeline Morgan CAGE on 12 April 1827 and Mrs. Catharine ROGERS on 24 May 1849. Adeline Morgan CAGE (1807 – 1846) was the daughter of Reuben CAGE (1772 – 1853) and Polly MORGAN. Reuben CAGE was son of Major William CAGE and Elizabeth DOUGLASS. Elizabeth DOUGLASS CAGE died in 1792 and then Major William CAGE married Nancy HALL MORGAN (ca. 1762 – 1800), daughter of Major William HALL and Thankful DOAK. Wilson CAGE (1770 – 1847) was a brother of Reuben CAGE, thus also a son of Major William CAGE and Elizabeth DOUGLASS. Major William CAGE also lived in Washington Co. TN (NC) in the late 1780s.

  3. My gggrandfather is James Martin Campbell and buried in Maples Cem in Jackson Co. ala. He was married to Jane Toney who according to the 1850 census, was 40 born in KY. making her born in 1810, later than you have listed. Also buried is Elijah Toney and per the census married to Sarah, 45 and born in Ga. It would seem these two may be the sisters that ran off with Elijah.

  4. I'm almost certain that Jane Campbell is listed as a sister of Elijah Toney in the same court case which mentions the Hall sisters. I believe she testifies in the case by affidavit. This case is in Smith County Tennessee court records and styled as Pleasant f. Cornwell vs. ELIJAH toney. this would make jane Toney a daughter of alexander Toney of Buckingham County Virginia. Jane hall had three children by toney and died in early 1840s. they were never married. After jane death he married sarah hall and had one daughter named Mary Jane.
